Innovation Mechanisms, Practical Challenges and Development Paths of Artificial Intelligence Empowering the Insurance Industry

Abstract: Driven by continuous advances in artificial intelligence (AI), the insurance industry has extensively integrated AI, big data, blockchain and other digital technologies to optimize core business processes including customer acquisition, underwriting, product pricing, risk management and claims settlement, thereby advancing its digital and intelligent transformation. This paper systematically analyzes the innovation mechanisms through which AI empowers the insurance industry from three core dimensions: elevating the digitalization and operational efficiency of the full business chain, improving the precision of insurance product modeling and pricing, and strengthening the industry’s full-cycle risk management capacity. It further identifies the prominent practical challenges in AI application within the insurance sector, such as bottlenecks in data governance and privacy compliance, limited model interpretability and algorithmic stability, risks concerning algorithmic fairness and ethics, and inadequate adaptability of the existing regulatory framework. Accordingly, this study proposes targeted development pathways from five perspectives: enhancing the data element governance system, boosting model technological innovation and robustness, improving ethical norms and fair governance mechanisms, establishing a regulatory framework compatible with digital-intelligent transformation, and strengthening international exchanges and cooperation. By clarifying the logic and orientation of AI empowerment in the insurance industry, this paper provides a reference for the industry to achieve standardized, compliant and high-quality development.
